Mary Ann F. Clarke Scott B.A., B.E.D.S., M. Arch. MAIBC

Mary Ann Clarke Scott has accumulated twelve years of professional experience in Architectural and Planning practice, and is a registered architect in BC. She has been in private practice since 1992, and is principal of the firm Generations: Architecture Planning Research. She was appointed in 1994 to the Real Estate Foundation of BC endowed position of Research Fellow in Environmental Gerontology at the Gerontology Research Centre at Simon Fraser University where she conducts a program of research in environments and consults to the development, design and health care communities. Her objective is to act as a resource to facilitate education, innovation and improved design in the development of environments for the elderly.

Expertise

Mary Ann Clarke Scott’s education includes: Architecture, Urban Geography, Sociology, Gerontology, Community Planning and Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia, the Emily Carr College of Art and Design. the Technical University of Nova Scotia (DalTech), and Dalhousie University.

Ms. Clarke Scott has attended numerous continuing education modules including the National Alzheimer’s Design Assistance Workshop in San Diego, Designing for the 21st Century Universal Design Conference in New York, Canada Forum in Vancouver, and has exchanged research findings and design concepts with experts from Australia, the Netherlands, the USA,, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Singapore, Japan and elsewhere. She has contributed her expertise: as an advisor to the BC Municipal Affairs & Housing and

Health & Seniors joint-ministerial Supportive Housing Review, the Lower Mainland Special Care Unit Committee, Veterans Affairs Canada, the Accessible and Useable Dwellings Project for the City of Vancouver Planning Department and the City of North Vancouver Affordable Housing Task Force, as a presenter for the Alzheimer Society of BC, the Island Highway Workshop in Parksville, the Accessible Communities Project in Campbell River, the AIBC-CMHC Flex Housing Design Workshop and by chairing the Building Committee of the University Women's Club of Vancouver. She was a guest speaker on Aged Care to the 1998 Australian National Architects' Convention in Cairns, Australia. Ms. Clarke is a member of the CIP-19 International Working Group on Universal Housing Design Standards. She has consulted to numerous hospitals, developers, architects, realtors, and community groups.

Ms. Clarke Scott’s Master's thesis research was conducted while a guest scholar at the Housing Research Institute at the University of Delft in the Netherlands, where she worked with world-class researchers in Housing and Gerontology. She received the CMHC Graduate Research Scholarship for her European case studies research into small congregate care facilities in Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Great Britain. Ms. Clarke's Canadian and European case studies research led to the development of analytical principles and design criteria for small-group, interdependent living for seniors, linking the issues of concern to social scientists with a theoretical framework relevant to design professionals. Her work culminated with the design of a prototypical "Living Group" housing model. She is interested in all aspects of supportive independent community-based living options for the elderly, as well as appropriate, supportive environmental design for people with dementia, and has developed expertise in these and other areas.
